Proteas Wines Limited

Proteas Wines is a family owned and operated company based in central Northumberland on the edge of the National Park. A few years ago, already a keen wine enthusiast, I was asked to put on a tasting of South African wines by a wine society in Newcastle. After several months research, learning about the Cape, investigating the wineries, talking with merchants and tasting dozens of wines – it was a tough job but someone had to do it – I developed a passion for my subject which evolved into the idea of starting my own business specialising in South African wines. Never one to pass up the opportunity to try the odd glass of good wine, my wife Carolyn was quickly on board, and together we formed Proteas Wines in July 2009.

Our aim is to become the foremost South African wine specialists in the UK. We believe that by concentrating on one thing and doing it well, we will build your confidence in us, and you will come to rely on us to supply you on a regular basis with wines of such consistently good quality and value that you won't need to look anywhere else. Our only concern is this - if I may borrow a quote from my friend Fiona Phillips, owner of Umkhulu............. "so many wines, so little time!"
