The Winelands
A bit about the region .......
Following the political reform of the early 1990’s, South Africa’s trade barriers were lifted, and after decades of isolation wine export markets opened up. There was an influx of modern winemaking techniques and vineyards were extended with plantings of the noble varieties. The result was extraordinary both in terms of quantity and quality, and as well as climbing up the world rankings in terms of volume of production, South African wines are now regularly seen winning the highest accolades in tastings and competitions around the world.
The majority of the wine growing regions lie within the Cape Floral Kingdom, an area of such importance it has been designated a World Heritage Site. This abundance of bio-diversity is the result of the many different varieties of soil type, topography and climatic conditions which occur in the winelands, and it is precisely these factors which give rise to the complex and varied wines produced throughout the region. South African viticulturalists and wine makers are becoming increasingly aware of how important their particular local conditions are to giving their wines their own unique character, resulting in the production of the distinctive and elegant wines you will find on offer from Proteas Wines.
