Umkhulu Akira 2001
£11.25
A meeting of two hemispheres variety wise. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Pinotage – known as a Cape Blend.
Made from grapes grown on vines up to 8 years old in Bottelary, Stellenbosch. After secondary fermentation the blend was made up and spent 9 months in American and French Oak barrels. The oak is there on the nose, but so are plums, black fruit and vanilla. These characteristics continue on the palate, all bound together in soft, round tannins. Of the five wines in our Umkhulu stable this wine is the most full-bodied. Drinking beautifully now. 83 points wine spectator. 3 ½ stars John Platter on release, but would be more now.
