Umkhulu Shiraz 2003
£11.25
Another cracking single varietal from the hands of Wilhelm Kritzinger at Umkhulu.
Following a cool, wet summer there was a smaller crop with more intense fruit. Four days fermentation, pumped over a total of twelve times, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then spent twelve months in Frech oak ( 50% new) before bottling. Deep garnet colour, vanilla, woodsmoke and pepper on the nose. Layers of rich mulberry fruit on the palate. A lighter, less oaked style than it's Australian brothers. Smooth, complex and well balanced. 89 points Wine Spectator. 3½ stars John Platter.
